My name is Mary Jane Goodman, and I offer alterations, draperies, upholstery, and sewing lessons at Seams And Beyond. Over the years, I have crafted various personalized apparel and items that address the needs of my clients across Canada.
My passion for sewing began very early in life. When I was young, I watched in awe as my grandmother passionately sew garment after garment.
In my early teenage years, my sisters and I received clothes handed down by older cousins. Because the clothes were not really the right size, I knew if I wanted to wear them, I would have to learn how to do the alterations myself. Through trial and error, I persevered. Ultimately, my sewing became faster and neater and didn’t stand out like a sore thumb.
As my interest and ability increased, I wanted to do more than alterations. My ambition was to expand my wardrobe by sewing clothes for myself.
It was a stroke of good fortune for me to have a neighbor who was not only a wonderful person but was an incredibly talented seamstress as well. Agreeing to a tradeoff, I would dust, vacuum, and wash her floors in exchange for sewing sessions equal to the time I spent cleaning.
Little did I know that I would spend most of my time crying as she made me pick out each seam until it was sewn perfectly. (But that is how I became a perfectionist). She taught me so well. Her teaching continued as she also introduced me to the joy of knitting and crocheting.
I have continued to develop my skills by taking lessons, working in fabric stores, teaching classes, and doing alterations, costumes, contract sewing, and much more. My clientele ranges from police departments to wedding entourages.
